Imperative need, for African Universities’ necessity for preparedness towards Machine Learning Algorithms

As previously stated, Artificial Intelligence is set to cause a major offset of regular office routines, making it a major threat to even the survival of the fittest.
For instance some time ago, an American Company that deals with stock trading re-invented its operational capacity to just two employees just after replacing over 500 workers with just a little over 100 computers.
In addition, reports now have it that major jobs in Hospitals worldwide live under the same threat of complete automation. Automation, Productively, Employment analysis also show that financial offices and insurance specialists could also face complete relevance thus disavowing over 40 million jobs worldwide.

The history of automation began when horses and chariots were put redundant with the introduction of trains which birthed the industrial revolution. Historians have often classified these changes as 1st. 2nd industrial revolutions. Typical was the discovery and application of Electricity and telephones, industrial manufacturing among several others. Though, noteworthy is the fact that most of these revolutions was brought to life for the objective of improving human productivity, erstwhile abandoning regular office jobs with innovative idea largely untouched.

Now, in what many refer to as the fourth industrial revolution, human productively is now standing on the brink of extinction. With the dawn of Intelligent Cyber-physical systems, integrated with high level robotics, nanotechnology, 3D imaging outputs and biotechnology technologies, human intervention is set to be suspended permanently. This reminds some of those Sci-Fi movies we have seen over the years. These are set to break the limit of the human brain capacity, putting together an enormous processing strength with the inertness to encapsulate effective machine learning.
This, inevitably will ensure a major change in labour markets with all usual work environments drastically transformed into an algorithm. Professions requiring higher education, for instance, accountants, auditors, pharmacists just to mention a few. The human brain itself is under-utilized during its lifetime, hence what efficient machine learning algorithms are capable of can certainly outlive what human’s can. Already, as we speak, firms are utilizing computing scanned efficiency for uploading hundreds of thousands of legal patterns. Meanwhile, this is expanding towards analyzing human behavior and psychology, hidden motives that the human eye can easily miss. Law professionals’ need for memorizing case law is also being overtaken by machine learning hence reducing the need for Lawyers.

For short, this fourth industrial era calls for new ways of work and path to enlighten millions of people worldwide. This change is imminent and is inevitable. In the next few years, more than half of the world’s jobs will be automated.
Employment will change, as well as education for graduates of Universities world-wide. The need for updated curriculum as well as adoption of these new trends to for-stall unemployment and redundancy cannot be overemphasized. Both Employees and Employers will need to learn new skills and pursue new skills for workplaces.
The role of Universities worldwide towards this new trend is essential. Especially in modelling future global workforce in modifying rules, curriculums, several African Universities are still lagging behind in line of this.
The first step for African Universities is to better comprehend this impending fourth industrial revolution. This will make room for student’s future compliance to this technological know-how. For the fact that, in places where jobs might not be necessarily replaced, automation and routine tasks will inevitably alter them. For graduates to remain employable in the labour market, Universities need to improve on critical thinking, emotional intelligence and learning capacities that exceed that of current and future potential of computer software technologies. The labour Market should also start focusing on creativity rather than GPA, or class of degree, analytic ability rather than mere meager calculations, problem solving rather than patching or job routine and redundancy which is very common in most African Countries.
Furthermore, sequel to the analogous University four year degree, there should be a uniform, integrated link between Governments, Industries and the labor market in order to bring an effective, modern educational lining that are relevant to the rapid technologies of today. This goes beyond the usual Resume credentials.

EDX is already doing wonders and already steaming as a typical example and International model of the future of responsive learning. Its micro postgraduate courses are already being accepted worldwide by International corporate firms.

We are looking at an increase in nano based degree. This type can last for six to nine months which is approved by leading employees of the labour market. Udacity has also been exploring this new method lately especially for Android Apps. It is strongly recommended that African Universities should look beyond existing structures and quickly develop new degrees with excellent relevance to to the ever changing labour market or in the nearest future see enrollment decrease. It’s not until a Lecturer finds it difficult to differentiate a paper written by a physical student and that written by a computer machine that the importance of this subject be made viable.
Libraries and University Faculties need to work at par with each other in order to prepare new ways to monitor plagiarism. This fourth industrial revolution is also set to affect University Administration as free up resources previously spent on salaries and redundant activities. Europe, and the United States of America are at the forefront of Automation, Robotics and its accompanying Computer Software Applications.

African Universities need to step up the pace in research and development as this area has long been held in contempt  most likely due to corruption and gross mismanagement common in most African countries.  Most industrialized countries get discoveries from this kind of area.


Pertinent is it to mention here that some Asian Countries like Singapore, Malaysia (via Global Innovation Alliance, Yale-NUS College), and India have revolutionized their economies through such steps as this with quality research and development. A new, holistic means of learning just needs to be done here coupled with emotional intelligence.
This, in both the long and short term will keep future businesses competitive and secure workers in an employable labour market. Sustainability is also a great issue to be dealt with in the African Context.
In summary, a new pattern of content depth, adaptive learning skills, with interdisciplinary study beyond the current analogous classroom based learning needs to be re-evaluated for African Universities.
